The Chicamacomico Banks Fire Department (yes, we know "Chicamacomico" is tough to say) hosted their annual fundraiser in September. Like all fire departments on Hatteras Island, it is completely staffed by volunteers. This particular station provides fire services for the villages of Rodanthe and Waves, as well as ocean/sound water rescue from Oregon Inlet all the way to the village of Avon. The volunteer members also respond to traffic accidents along NC 12 and within the villages.
Once a year, the Chicamacomico Banks Fire Department hosts a Chili Cookoff at the Cape Hatteras KOA campground in Waves. Contestants and chili lovers from all over North Carolina make the trip to Hatteras Island.
Proceeds of the fundraiser have gone towards equipment purchases, training, and financial support for families who lost a firefighter. Fire departments in need after Hurricane Katrina have also received proceeds from the Chili Cookoff. This year, all money raised will go towards new ocean rescue equipment.
If you're vacationing on Hatteras Island next September, be sure to stop by the Chili Cookoff. You'll have a great time and support a great cause!
