The Outer Banks has its fair share of folklore and legends from lost colonists to a ghost ship to ghost. This Halloween explore the mysterious OBX and visit local haunts.

The Grey Man
Have you seen or heard of the Grey Man? Locals claim the Gray Man is a spirit of a man who drowned in a Hurricane off the Outer Banks in the early 1990s. He has reportedly been seen walking the beach in the vicinity of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The Grey Man has been dubbed the early Hurricane detection radar for the OBX.

Your best bet for seeing him is to watch the weather channel and wait for a segment when the news reporter is on the beach in the pouring rain.  The Grey Man may be walking the beach in the background!

The Ghost Ship of Diamond Shoals

In 1921 the Coast Guard on Cape Hatteras discovered a schooner that had run aground on the Diamond Shoals. When the Coast Guard went to investigate they boarded the ship and discovered no one was aboard. The life boats and the nautical instruments were gone, but the beds were made and coffee was left on the stove. There have been many speculations as to what might have happened to the captain and his crew. Some have suggested a mutiny or that the crew jumped ship. There were investigations by six government agencies, but the reason behind the captain and crews’ disappearance was never determined.

The Lost Colony

A whole colony vanished on Roanoke Island. In 1585, over 427 years ago, 117 men, women, and children sailed from Plymouth, England in an attempt to settle in Roanoke Island and create a colony. Something went wrong and the colony disappeared.  The only clue the colony left behind was the word “CROATAN” carved into a post.
