Summer and ice cream go hand in hand, especially at the beach! The Outer Banks is home to lots of spots to grab dessert after dinner or for lunch (you’re on vacation, treat yourself). These are just a few of our favorites, where any day can be National Ice Cream Day.

Surfin’ Spoon

At their new location in Nags Head, Surfin’ Spoon offers frozen yogurt and sorbet in flavors that will fit every fancy. Grab a cup, fill it up with whatever frozen treat you like, and be sure to leave room for toppings (that’s when it really gets fun). Cookie dough pieces, all types of fruit, hot fudge and more. They even have homemade ice cream sandwiches to take home.

Big Buck’s Homemade Ice Cream

Located in Corolla, Kitty Hawk, and Manteo, Big Buck’s makes their own ice cream and sorbet daily. A long list of unique flavors includes espresso chip, cherry vanilla, chocolate almond and more. Celebrate a special occasion with an ice cream cake, or share a banana split with your favorite person.

Outer Banks Frozen Yogurt

Alongside frozen yogurt, this dessert spot has Dippin’ Dots, scooped ice cream and sorbet, milkshakes, floats, egg-free cookie dough by the scoop and more. Pro tip: add cookie dough to your cup of frozen yogurt. Thank us later.

Hatteras Sno-Balls

On Hatteras Island in Frisco, this little shop offers shaved ice that you can cover in a rainbow of different syrups. Cones stacked with scoops of ice cream, frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream are on the menu, too.

John’s Drive In

Come for the food, stay for the milkshakes and soft serve ice cream. They even offer a frozen sweet treat for your favorite doggo – be sure to ask for the popular Pup Cup! Find John’s in Kitty Hawk, where they’ve been open since 1977 on the Beach Road.
