If Bodie Island Lighthouse had a catch phrase it would probably be "I just can't get no respect." Most Outer Banks vacationers only glimpse at it on their way south towards Hatteras Island. As part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the lighthouse often lives in the shadow of its more famous cousin, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton. However, the lesser-known of the two has an incredibly interesting history!

Did you know there has been not 1, not 2, but 3 Bodie Island Lighthouses? The first was built in 1847 and had to be abandoned due to poor construction (the tower started leaning precariously after only 2 years). The second was built in 1859, but became a victim of the Civil War in 1861. Retreating Confederate troops blew up the 80-foot lighthouse because they feared the Yankees would use it as a lookout point.

Third time's a charm, right? The final Bodie Island Lighthouse was completed in 1872 and stood 156 feet tall. The lighthouse is located south of Nags Head, just before Oregon Inlet. Here's a hint: Be sure to pronounce the name as the locals do - "Body" with a long "o" sound.

After years of neglect, Bodie Island Lighthouse is getting "a little work done." Her facelift will include reinforced stairs, new windows, masonry work, new electrical systems, and lots of cosmetic touch ups. A new wooden boardwalk, bike paths, a new roof for the lightkeeper's station and other upgrades will complete Bodie Island Lighthouse's "beautified" look. Once the restoration is complete, visitors will be able to climb the 205 steps to the top and marvel at the panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.

We're so glad that the underdog of OBX lighthouses is finally being show some love!
